Cancelled Culture
In this video, Kent shared some of his experiences on
rejection. He was in Bible College with his wife in their first year of marriage.
They needed funds, so he had to get a job in a Bottle shop that sold alcohol. They
people there celebrated immorality. Not too long he was sacked because he didn’t
join in the celebration. Soon after that, he got a second job in a Filling
Station. This job lasted for a day because he decided not to “lie”. He yet got another
job in a different Filling Station. This time around, the job lasted a night. He
was sacked for similar reasons.
He had lost three jobs in about a week. He didn’t give up.
They kept on doing what they believed was God’s will for their lives and He opened
doors for them.
One time, he got a painting job in the house of an old
woman. While he was painting inside the house each day, her son would come
visit. He really hated Christians. He was very angry at him; he was convinced
that he was talking with his mother (the old lady) during break time, drinking
tea and finding out about all the money she had in her account and that he was
going to sweet-talk her to get this money.
So, at the end of the week’s work, the old woman asked how
much she should pay him and he said “$20”. It was ridiculous because he should
have been paid $100 for a job like that. However, that was just to deal with
the son who thought Christians were evil people and were after the money. He took the $20 and then the next day, while
still in Bible school, the principal called him and his wife into his office
and said that the $1,000 that they owed for their fees had been paid. According
to the principal, someone had come in and paid the money for them.
They didn’t have to get what they needed for their pay from
this woman. Likewise, we could suffer the persecution and God will still look
after us and still meet our needs. Today, the council culture has really
increased in our nations and it's difficult for people to express their views. They
can't get jobs. Because sometimes they signed the contracts that if they take
the job, they're not allowed to express their opinion in public. Other people
are able to express their values so why isn't that Christians can express their
own values?
In 2020, we saw every one of these rights cancelled. The
right to free speech, the right to freedom of assembly, the right of freedom of
religion. And you know all these things have been politicized, and it's become
a political issue. The real reason why this is politicized is to take away our
freedoms.
The real issue is to take away our freedoms and to bring us
into a totalitarian kind of system. And this is scaring people today that have
jobs. They are afraid to lose their jobs. There are people speaking over long
time they can't express anything in the workplace. They can't speak freely, can’t
express their opinions, etc. in fear that they'll lose their jobs.
It was alright for me when I lost my jobs because we didn't
have a mortgage, we were renting a house. I only had my wife, didn’t have children
then. We could’ve been thrown out in the street, that's fine. It wasn't too
cold at night. It wasn't a big problem. But today, if you've got children and
you mortgage the house, you don't want to lose a job.
This mortgage of the thing is a problem because the Bible
says that the borrower is a servant to the lender and; and so the borrower is in
a kind of captivity where, bit by bit, he has to mortgage his values or her
values (as not only the houses mortgage); “can't say this, can't say that”, until
we can’t really love and serve God. And it comes down to the place where we
have to make a choice.
But the good news is that God will provide us. I know it's
difficult. People we're facing difficult decisions. We've been squeezed more
and more, the change has come to change has to come. So I just want to
encourage us that God will meet your needs. He is faithful, He is good, He will
provide for you. And we don't have to be afraid.
